Chapel of Panagia “Eleftherotria” and saint Paraskevi
Feast day: July 26 and October 28
The chapel is located within the precinct of the episcopal residence, near the Monastery of saint Thekla. It was erected in 2013 in memory of the 121 victims of the “Elios” airline tragedy in Grammatiko (August 14, 2005). The chapel was dedicated to saint Paraskevi, for preserving the connection of the community with the saint, to which the older church of Mosfiloti, replaced at a later stage by the church of saint Marina, was dedicated to her. It was eventually decided that the chapel should also be dedicated to the Mother of God “Eleftherotria” (in Greek: the one who liberates), with the hope that she would intercede for the redemption of Cypriot people from all their suffering.
The foundation stone of the chapel was laid on March 19, 2006. It was inaugurated on July 26, 2006, on the feast day of saint Paraskevi. To the west of the domed chapel stands a closed narthex. Externally, the chapel is covered with stone, while its interior is decorated with frescoes, painted by the hagiographic workshop “Antiphonitis”. Above the western door there is a mosaic depiction of Christ, and in the pronaos of saints Paraskevi and of the Mother of God “Eleftherotria”. At the exterior of the chapel have been placed two marble plaques, on which are written the names of the victims of the “Elios” airline tragedy. The feast day of the church is on the 26th of July and on the 28th of October.
