CHURCH OF PANAGIA SOUMELA

Church of Panagia Soumela

Feast day: August 28

The church will be completed soon. The Foundation for the Assistance of Pontic Greeks “Panagia Soumela” has initiated and led the effort of founding and completing the church. It belongs to the type of the three-aisled basilica with a dome and lateral apses in the east. At the south-west is located the belfry topped by a small dome. The exterior of the church is covered with white stone. The windows of the drum of the dome are covered by marble screens with circular apertures. The main door (west) is accessed via a marble staircase and through the portico with the arches. There are doors on both the south and north walls. The congregation, since the main church has not finished yet, is using the underground chapel. In the church is kept a copy of the icon of Panagia Soumela, which was offered in 2009 by the Metropolitan of Veroia Panteleimon, when the foundation stone of the church was laid by the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II. The feast day of the church is on August 28, the feast day of the Assumption of the Mother of God in the Julian calendar.
