Chapel of Panagia Livadiotissa

The chapel is located in the north-east of the settlement of Pano Lefkara, on a hill plateau that overlooks the valley of Syrkatis river. It is noted in Kitchener’s map of 1885. A monastery with the same name is found in land registry archival records, a metochion of the Monastery of Mangana. No further evidence exists for this, however identified with another church dedicated to Panagia Kyra of Livadeia (Karpasia province). It is possible that there is some relationship between them. According to the Codex of Lefkara of 1789, “by order of Archbishop Meletios, an authorisation was secured for restoring the church of the Most Holy Theotokos of Livadi of Kourvalos, which was in a state of disrepair, since the times of Mustafa Pashia, who was governing over Cyprus”.

It belongs to the type of the compressed cross-in-square with a dome, it is 7.67 m long, excluding the 0.93 m projecting semicircular arch, and its width is 5.00 m. It could be dated, based on the shape of the arches and its height proportions, to the late 15th or 16th century. In 1983 it was repaired by Annitsa and Argyros Stakkis, who are probably responsible for the most recent restoration of the chapel that included works on the roof and grouting with cement mortar.
